Britney Spears Bodyguard Dishes on Drug Use

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Unlike the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, Kevin Federline and, if you believe Kanye West, MTV, Tony Barretto is not out to get Britney Spears—despite mounting evidence to the contrary.

The former bodyguard turned not so secret witness in Spears’ ongoing custody battle took his case to Today Monday, denying that he is seeking vengeance on his onetime employer or that he’s looking to gain money or fame in return for his damning deposition against the singer. Instead, Barretto insists his allegations of Spears’ drug use, erratic behavior and rampant nudity are in the best interests of her children.

Barretto, appearing alongside camera-ready attorney Gloria Allred, spoke out about the sealed and uncontested statement he gave the Los Angeles Superior Court last week.

“I just wanted to make sure that the public and the court and her fans know the truth, and it’s very hard to get that point across, so I’m just here to make sure that it’s known,” he said, adding that his decision to step forward now with his accusations, several months after Spears fired him, was not the result of sour grapes.

“I think that’s inhuman.”

While Barretto made clear that he never witnessed Spears engaging in any drug use in front of her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, he did say he saw her taking drugs on two separate occasions during his two-month tenure in her employ, which began in May, immediately following her stint in rehab earlier this year. He said both times took place in a Los Angeles nightclub.

“One was at her table, the incident happened at her table. She had me hold a curtain to make her area private, and at one point it was getting kind of hard to continue to hold the curtain for such a long period of time, so I [tried] to look over and to get her approval to let go of the curtain, at which point I noticed what she was doing.

“The other occasion is when we escorted her to a private restroom upstairs, which they had secured for her. And she was in there for some time, and I was there waiting for her outside the door, again for some time. And I thought it would be appropriate to check on her, and I knocked and peeked in and I observed this behavior.”

What behavior, specifically, Barretto was not at liberty to discuss, as his deposition has been placed under seal.

He also described a third incident in a Los Angeles hotel room. Although he did not witness Spears taking drugs, he said he did notice evidence of drug use in the room and claimed Spears was sweating and shaking and appeared “strung out.”

Additionally, Barretto said he witnessed Spears drinking on several occasions but declined to assess whether he believed she was abusing booze.

“Alcohol, that’s one’s personal opinion,” he said. “I don’t know if abuse is the correct language. I believe I have seen her drink alcohol, and that would be up to the courts to decide whether that was abuse or just a drink.”

Asked whether he attempted to address her purported misbehavior, Barretto said he feared crossing his former boss.

“It was—it was almost forbidden to talk to her about her personal life. And you know, Britney doesn’t listen to nobody. I mean, that’s apparent.”

Barretto said he was inspired to step forward and publicy expose Spears’ alleged problems in part because he has two young children of his own.

“I’m just happy that the judge has stepped in and put some elements in place to give her hope. I’m not here to destroy Britney. I’m here for the kids, I’m here to speak out on their behalf, because of my frustrations at the time when I worked for her and not being able to protect them from her, and I have accomplished that now.”

While Spears’ former bodyguard was taking to the airwaves, her new attorney, Sorrell Trope, was back in a Los Angeles court for an unscheduled hearing in the singer’s ongoing, headline-grabbing custody dispute.

Trope, along with Federline’s attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan, appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court Monday morning to “refine certain areas of a judge’s previous order.” Neither party opted to elaborate on which side took issue with the previous order, what portions they took issue with or whether a resolution was reached.

A progress report from Spears’ dictated parenting coach is due to the court on Oct 22, and the coach is due to answer judge’s questions on Nov. 26, when the next hearing in the custody battle is scheduled to take place.
